Depends on the library. Some libraries make their music freely available to networks/studios, and get paid via ASCAP/BMI when the music is used on-air (performance royalties). Other libraries send their catalog/hard drive but charge a sync fee per use. Yet others do not send their music in bulk - production companies visit the library website and select tracks from there. Read up on "cue sheets" to learn how ASCAP/BMI calculates royalties. Cue sheets are filed by the production company/studio/network and detail ALL the music being used. They have to do this and then the performing rights organization charges them.

How does a music library get paid from lets say a large network like NBC from their promos department. Does NBC pay the libraries a flat fee per month to use as much of their library as they want or do they just have a good over all rate set with the networks for a per song usage. I've been in edit studios working on promos and they definatley have a closed list of libraries the promo producers and editors are authorized to use from their music departments. For example, if a promo producer downloads 5 tracks in his edit to audition with his promo, but in the final decision only goes with 2 of those tracks, how does ASCAP (BMI, SEASAC) know which ones the promo producer has chosen. In addition if the music libraries are charging a per song fee how does the music library know which 2 songs were chosen so they can get the musician their share of the purchase. Because most promo producers I work with do NOT fill out cue sheets. so I was thinking the libraries must have flat fee for unlimited use pay structure set up. Does this make sense? haha. sorry if it doesn't.

Send a whole CD as long as the tracks are all of a similar quality. I recommend that they all be in a fairly similar genre as well. Also, they DO want mixed/mastered - definitely! They just mean don't compress to MP3, convert to WAV, and submit that.

Speaking of Pump Audio, I was confused about the terms of submissions pertaining to “compression” it says ‘no compression in any stage of the process’, does this mean they want unmastered material? (or no overall compression but individual tracks can be compressed) Any tips would be great. Do you suggest sending them just a few really good songs or a full cd of songs? Thanks.

hey, my band is signed to Tate Music Group. we were freaking out about the scam talk too. but we decided to do it because we saw that they had an A+ in the BBB. we signed the contract and went to TMG in Mustang OK. it is legit. they were really professional. we recorded our album and had a photo shoot. $2,000 is nothing compared to the quality of sound that comes out of your recordings. sound like this in bigger labels is probaly 15-20K. plus the 2 grand is literally a deposit. something to insure them that you are serious about your music. DO IT. and YES I AM A REAL MUSICIAN SIGNED TO TATE MUSIC GROUP. go here and listen to our music please. www.reverbnation.com/elevenafterarmy. become a fan if youd like!! were also on Facebook.
