Since then, I’ve been working on a number of other sample library projects. One of them is Koto Nation: Classical Instruments of Japan. As the title suggests, we sampled koto, shamisen and bass koto in great depth, with numerous articulations, round robins, velocities and two mic positions, plus special FX patches. For the project we recorded Masayo Ishigure, one of the foremost koto players in the world, who previously performed on the soundtrack of John Williams’ score for Memoirs of a Geisha. At $99 for over 8gb of samples, it’s the deepest library of its kind, and excellent if you’re interested in Japanese music!

Just a few days ago, composer and fellow ReMixer Jimmy “Big Giant Circles” Hinson and I released a library called Acoustic Revolutions Volume 1: Adult Contemporary Guitar Loops. This one was designed and recorded entirely by Jimmy, and it’s a pretty amazing collection of modern acoustic guitar phrases, strums, arpeggios and progressions.

For only $19, Acoustic Revolutions Volume 1 is a no-brainer – not to mention it’s compatible with any program, as it’s just a collection of WAV loops that can be dragged aqnd dropped into any sequencer or sampler. I’ve always found traditional Japanese music to be extremely beautiful in its tonality, as well as the instruments used. Many of my tracks have extensively incorporated sampled Japanese instruments, such as Flying Heaven, The Koto Chill and Bushido Blade. I noticed that while such samples existed as part of larger collections, they were all lacking in detail, and very few dedicated collections existed.

Koto Nation is a spiritual successor to the classical Indian instrument library I co-designed, Sitar Nation. Incorporating koto, bass koto (never before sampled) and jiuta-style shamisen, this new library includes thousands of recordings performed by master koto player Masayo Ishigure, who worked with John Williams and Yo-Yo Ma on the score for “Memoirs of a Geisha”!

In addition to the contest, I’ve also been working on a number of other projects (and enjoying a new PlayStation 3.) A few updates on these endeavors:

* There’s a new Zebra 2 video up at the Tutorials page, covering basic patch design.
* My guitar sample library (Shreddage) is almost done and will be released on Feb. 14th.
* There’s a new downtempo CD in the works. Expect some freebies here shortly.

The result of our efforts is almost complete, and it’s called Shreddage: Electric Rhythm Guitar: Rock & Metal. You can read more about the library at the Impact Soundworks website, but here’s the summary: it’s a DI (clean), 24/44.1 electric guitar library with 8x round robins, tons of articulations, drop Bb tuning and, well, we think it sounds better than any other rhythm guitar samples out there. Listen for yourself to the demos below!

Haven’t heard of Groove Bias yet? It’s a 4gb collection of old-school drum sounds, recorded using all-analog gear, vintage mics, busted consoles and, of course, TAPE. It took three separate studios to record the 3,500+ samples of 24/96 content, which comprise three custom acoustic drum kits and a set of assorted percussive instruments. All formats of Groove Bias are unlocked for your editing and re-mapping pleasure, and with 5-10 round robins and 5-16 velocities per switchable kit component, you’ve got a lot to play with!
